Ext3 and USB Ethernet/Serial for NS-K330/OpenWRT

This post follows on from my initial experiments with running OpenWRT on the NS-K330. I briefly document adding support for Ext3-formatted USB drives (using kmod-fs-ext4), ASIX-based and DM9601-based USB-Ethernet adapters and PL2303-based USB-Serial adapters to my NS-K330.

OpenWRT on the NS-K330

At the start of 2011 I began experimenting with an NS-K330 “NAS”, eventually running SnakeOS, Debian and FreeBSD 9. This post describes my more recent experiments with OpenWRT on the NS-K330.

Using a Dreamplug to build FreeBSD 9 packages for NS-K330

Earlier this year I was experimenting with installing FreeBSD 9-CURRENT on the ARM-based NS-K330. A major stumbling block was building Packages from the Ports collection — the NS-K330 had basically no room (nor CPU grunt) to build packages locally. Recently I’ve utilised an indirect solution — build packages on a colleague’s DreamPlug running FreeBSD 9, then […]

Using modules to extend FreeBSD 9-CURRENT on NS-K330

A few days ago I got a heavily stripped down FreeBSD 9-CURRENT kernel running from flash on my NS-K330. This post summarises my next experiment — building kernel modules to extend the NS-K330’s FreeBSD capabilities without exceeding the space allowed for the flash-resident kernel image.

USB 2.0 only on NS-K330 under FreeBSD 9-CURRENT

While trying to get USB support for USB serial devices working on my NS-K330 running FreeBSD 9-CURRENT, I discovered that the current patched kernel only reliably supports USB 2.0 devices.

Booting FreeBSD 9.0-CURRENT from NS-K330’s Flash

A few days ago I got FreeBSD 9-CURRENT running on my NS-K330. This post summarises my next experiment — getting FreeBSD 9.0-CURRENT to boot from the NS-K330’s flash.

Booting FreeBSD 9.0-CURRENT from NS-K330’s RAM

Almost a month ago I obtained an NS-K330 “NAS”  — a tiny embedded computer with one 10/100Mbps LAN port and two USB 2.0 ports, intended for home use as a ultra-cheap Network Attached Storage unit. This post summarises my initial experiments with installing and booting FreeBSD 9.0-CURRENT (as of early 2011) via uBoot boot loader […]

Serial access to uBoot on the NS-K330

Almost a month ago I obtained an NS-K330 “NAS”  — a tiny embedded computer with one 10/100Mbps LAN port and two USB 2.0 ports, intended for home use as a ultra-cheap Network Attached Storage unit. This post describes my experiments with connecting to the device’s serial port and uBoot boot loader.

FTP vs rsync on the NS-K330 with SnakeOS 1.2.0

I recently been playing with my new NS-K330 “NAS”  — a tiny device with one 10/100Mbps LAN port and two USB 2.0 ports, intended for home use as a cheap Network Attached Storage unit and file download client. This post describes the network transfer performance I experienced using ftp and rsync (with and without ssh) […]

Adding a Debian environment to the NS-K330 under SnakeOS

I recently discovered the NS-K330 “NAS”  — a tiny device with one 10/100Mbps LAN port and two USB 2.0 ports, intended for home use as a cheap Network Attached Storage unit and file download client. I received mine December 30th 2010, and have been poking at it the past few days. This post describes how […]
